Canis Media named as Local TV operator

Comux UK the not for profit organisation of local TV licence holders which is owned by Canis Media has been named as the new multiplex operator for local TV on digital terrestrial television.

Freeview is the digital terrestrial television service that is Free to air

Comux will maintain and operate the multiplexes for the Local TV services which will be aired on Freeview

The telecommunications regulator Ofcom has chosen Comux to build and operate a technical infrastructure to broadcast to local areas of the UK through the Freeview free to air digital television service.

The licence, called the ‘MuxCo’ licence has been awarded to Comux for a 12 year period, and Comux are now responsible for the delivery of local television channels to air by the end of 2013.

In May 2012 the telecommunications regulator Ofcom invited applications from companies to run a local digital television service in 21 areas using a dedicated local TV multiplex and 57 applications were received to run local TV in 19 areas.

A multiplex represents a limited amount of broadcasting capacity on Freeview and other digital television services.

14 local licences have been awarded so far by Ofcom for areas such as Brighton, Sheffield, Scotland and Grimsby.  An announcement on the London licence is also expected in the near future.

Comux UK will be managed by Canis Media and based in Birmingham Science park.  All of the profits that are made from the venture by Comux will be channelled back into local TV.  The charity will also be headed up by Canis Media’s head of local Clare Bramley.

Ed Hall of Canis Media said that playing a role in local TV is “one of the most exciting changes to the UK’s TV landscape for many years”.

He added “I believe that we won because our innovative cooperative structure maximises the chance of success for each and every local TV franchise holder,”

“I’m now looking forward to building the infrastructure and particularly excited to see the first local TV services on-air. This really is a step-change; previously local TV has been limited to a handful of cities but soon there will be up to 60 towns and cities with their own local channel. This revolutionises how the UK’s local communities are served by TV.”

BBC iPlayer has record 2012

The video on demand service BBC iPlayer has revealed that it has had a record 2012 fuelled by the popularity of programs such as Sherlock, Top Gear and the London Olympics.

Video On Demand service BBC iPlayer has had a record breaking 2012

The London Olympics has contributed to the success of BBC iPlayer

During this time users consumed more than 36 billion minutes of BBC content across a range of devices particularly mobile.

In 2012, people spent approximately 34% more time watching in BBC iPlayer than the previous year.  The most popular event on BBC iPlayer was Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony for the London Olympics which topped the iPlayer charts with 3.33m requests followed by episodes of Top Gear with 2.83m requests and Sherlock with 2.53m requests.

Overall there were around 2.32 billion requests for TV and radio programmes on iPlayer in 2012, and consumed 36.5bn minutes for content across all of the 650 platforms where BBC iPlayer is available.

The BBC said that mobile was becoming the most popular way to consume content on BBC iPlayer though online PC’s and Mac’s also remained popular whilst tablets were also being used extensively.

There was also a 177% year on year uplift in requests from mobiles and tablets last year and these devices now account for more than a quarter of total iPlayer requests.  Also for the first time in history requests from PC’s comprised of less than total iPlayer requests in the entire month.

The BBC figures also revealed that 10.8m programmes were saved to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices whilst downloaded programs now make up 6% of TV viewing on mobiles and tablets, whilst in 2012, Live Restart was also launched which has been used by around 30% of people watching TV on iPlayer.

Daniel Danker the BBC General Manager of Programmes said “Last year, the use of iPlayer shifted from PCs and early adopter devices like game consoles to screens used by all audiences,”

“Mobile, tablet, and connected TV skyrocketed, with a particular emphasis on audiences taking iPlayer on the go.

“This year, we’re looking forward to turning iPlayer into an entertainment destination, with a relentless focus on making iPlayer as easy and enjoyable as television.”

Sky plan to expand reach of 3D channel

Satellite television broadcaster Sky is in the process of planning a growth expansion of its 3D television channel on the digital television platform.

Sky 3D is currently available to all Sky World subscribers

Under the new proposals approximately 4.5m Sky HD customers could get Sky 3D

Under the new plans, the Sky 3D channel will be available to 4.5m Sky HD subscribers as it considers whether or not to roll out the new channel to its sports and entertainment package subscribers.

Currently, only customers that subscribe to the Sky World digital television package can get the Sky 3D channel and the new plans would significantly change that.

At the moment, Sky have not said whether or not they intend to charge an additional fee to customers that want to subscribe to the 3D channel and a number of different options are also being considered.

One is to potentially expand the service onto its video on demand service Sky Go, whilst another involves potentially making the channel available during set timeslots.

Sky 3D initially started off by showing a wide range of sports and movies content whilst in recent times there has been more of a shift towards providing more documentaries and factual based programming.

During last summers Olympics approximately 350,000 people watched 3D content from the Olympics in 3D and the Sky 3D channel is available to all Sky HD set top box subscribers.

A spokesman for Sky said “As the number of Sky homes that own a compatible TV continues to grow, we are looking at the potential for even more Sky customers to experience Sky 3D.”

BT Sport seals WTA tennis deal

BT Sport the brand new digital television channel set to launch on BT Vision later this year, has announced that it has secured the rights to show as much as 800 hours of WTA (Womens Tennis) per year.

WTA tennis is the latest sport to be acquired by BT Vision for the BT Sports channel

BT Sports will show coverage from 21 WTA tournaments from around the world.

As part of the coverage BT will offer coverage from 21 WTA tournaments from across the world including the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships at the end of the season.

The rights to the WTA tennis is the latest in a long line of sports rights that BT have obtained since the telecommunications company announced that it had secured rights to the Barclays Premier League football season alongside Sky Sports.  Since then it has secured the services of former BBC Formula 1 presenter Jake Humprhies and also signed deals which will see Aviva Premier League rugby shown on its BT Sports channels.

Ahead of the launch in the summer, BT has said that it would like to broaden the appeal of its BT Sports channel and that would be the main reason that it has chosen to invest in WTA tennis coverage.

The popularity of tennis is increasing in the UK, in addition to Andy Murray’s recent US Open victory, there have also been great strides made by both Heather Watson and Laura Robson who are both ranked in the top 50.

Simon Green of BT was clearly pleased with the new deal stating “This is our first women’s sport for the channels and we see a genuine opportunity to really develop the exposure for women’s sport with our new channels. We are focusing on several more women’s sports and we hope to be able to announce more rights soon.”

“Women’s tennis is the highest profile women’s sport, attracting a global audience of 185 million viewers. It’s a good moment for the British women, with Laura and Heather starting to challenge for honours. We want to follow their story over the next few years, as well as showcasing the world’s best players in the tournaments that help determine their world rankings.”
