The next generation Freeview service with video on demand YouView is set to finally launch a brand new set top box which will give users access to digital TV channels, a PVR, and video on demand service.
The new YouView set top box has been created by set top box manufacturer Humax, and was unveiled today by Lord Alan Sugar and other media names including ITV’s Adam Crozier, and BBC Director General Mark Thompson.
Humax’s new YouView set top box offers all of the main Freeview TV and radio channels, whilst it can also be connected to the internet in order to offer video on demand services such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, Channel 5’s video on demand service and 4OD.
Speaking at the launch, Lord Sugar said that the new set top box from Humax was just a ‘carcass’ and allowed the YouView service to be fully scalable in the future, with additional free slots for additional content services including STV Player, and Now TV the brand new video on demand service that has recently been announced by Sky.
YouView is also keen to recruit other content providers with 300 companies getting in touch with the brand new digital television provider in order to try and offer content through the YouView service.
There are also rumours that many of the backers of the service such as TalkTalk and BT will also offer their TalkTalk TV and BT Vision digital television services through the new YouView set top box, and internet service providers could also offer the new Humax set top box alongside their broadband services.
Lord Sugar hailed the launch of YouView as a British innovation, and not something “made in California”, whilst he also described the new launch as a “great moment” for television. The target market for the new set top box is the 15 million Freeview viewers in the UK who do not want a pay TV service.
The new box will retail for around £299 in major high street and online retailers including Argos, Curry’s and Amazon.
