The BBC has updated its red button services in order to bring it into line with connected TV and has re-launched on the Virgin Media TiVo service.
The new service from the BBC is called Connected Red Button and is an overhaul of the previous BBC Red Button service which allows viewers to access additional radio and TV content along with some video on demand content through certain digital television services.
The brand new service will initially be launched on the Virgin Media TiVo service after the cable television operator Virgin Media and the BBC agreed a partnership to create a range of next generation television services.
As part of the new features on the Connected Red Button service, viewers will be able to browse and view the latest news and weather headlines along with video clips on an on demand basis. There are also plans to show a wide range of sports events following the success of the BBC Red Button at the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
The roll out of Connected Red Button to the Virgin Media TiVo service means that approximately 1.2m households now have access to the new version of the BBC Red Button, and the BBC expects to expand its offering to other connected TV services in the next few months.
Victoria Jaye the BBC’s head of IPTV and TV online content said “With BBC Connected Red Button, we’re starting with the TV audience who love our broadcast output and we’re curating online content on the big screen in ways that add value to their TV viewing,” before adding “The audience can sit back and relax – the internet just made TV better.”
Virgin Media’s director of general entertainment Cindy Rose was also pleased with the roll out to Virgin Media’s TiVo service by saying “The BBC understands as passionately as we do how important connected television is for home entertainment. ”
“We’re delighted the BBC is working with us to launch another milestone in interactive services. Our commitment to this partnership of innovation means Virgin Media TiVo customers are the first to experience the latest interactive services at the press of a button.”
