Sky has launched brand new features on its mobile app which allow users of Apple’s iPhone smartphone and the iPod touch to use their devices as a remote control for their Sky+ set top box.
The remote control functionality is already available on the Apple iPad
The new update to the Sky+ app is now available from Apple’s iTunes store and allows the user to use their iPhone or iPod touch to change channels, and use the PVR functionality on their Sky+ set top box including the ability to pause, record and rewind live television by either swiping or tapping the screen.
In addition to the new remote control functionality, the changes to the Sky+ app also mean that customers can also access their Sky planner through their iPhone giving the user the ability to view and organise all of the recorded programmes on their Sky+ set top box.
The new functionality has already launched on the Apple iPad, and in order for customers to use the remote control functionality they will need to connect both their Sky+ HD set top box and Apple device to the same WiFi network.
It is expected that the new functionality will also be launched by Sky on the Android range of operating systems shortly.
The director of Sky’s TV products Luke Bradley-Jones said “People use their phones as a one-stop-shop to manage virtually every aspect of their lives, whether organising their diary, checking their bank balance or paying bills…so why not use it to control their TV too?”
