Ofcom approves Freeview HD

Ofcom has effectively given Freeview the green light to deliver HD TV channels.

Ofcom has changed the terms of the BBC Free to View Limited’s (aka Freeview) licence on Multiplex B, allowing them to upgrade and reorganise their use of the airwaves for the digital terrestrial broadcast of HD television.

HD Freeview is a big step closer to reality.  ITV HD-1 will run in the evenings from 6.30pm until 11pm – great for HD Champions League football, Corrie and ITV drama.  Channel 4 will also broadcast an HD channel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  BBC’s HD channel will of course join this.

This is great news for HD TV owners who don’t want to shell out on Sky or Virgin Media.  There’s no launch date yet and it’s worth keeping in mind that you’ll need a new HD Freeview box with the HDMI connector to experience HD TV – and an HD Ready TV of course!
