Korean electronics manufacturer LG has made its next generation television set available for pre order in South Korea.
The 55 inch 55EM9700 flat screen television from LG uses organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology which is said to offer both a better quality of picture and is also said to be more energy efficient than other LCD and plasma screen digital television sets.
The new digital television is now available for pre order at more than 1,400 LG stores with the shipping of the new televisions imminent in the near future. The digital television from LG is said to be retailing for around £6,300 with availability set to come to other regions in the first quarter of 2013.
The screen is believed to be one of the thinnest in the market with the depth of the 55EM9700 measuring just 4 millimetres and weighing less than 10 kilograms. The screen uses a four colour pixel system to deliver images with red, green and blue pixels alongside a white pixel to create a high quality colour mix.
Samsung has also launched a 55 inch OLED television but LG is the first to hit the market with its brand new digital television set whilst it is expected that the price of the next generation digital televisions will reduce by 2015.
President and Chief Executive of LG’s Home Entertainment Company Havis Kwon said “We are extremely pleased to be able to make this announcement at the start of the new year because we believe that OLED will usher in a whole new era of home entertainment,”
“Not since colour TV was first introduced 60 years ago has there been a more transformational moment.”
“When high-definition TV was first introduced 15 years ago, the public’s reaction was ‘wow!’ but when customers see our razor-thin OLED TV for the first time, they’re left speechless.”
“That’s as clear an indicator as any that OLED TV is much more than just an incremental improvement to current television technology.”
