Internet search engine giant Google has revealed that it will start to offer movies on its video on demand Google TV service in Europe from next week.
Google TV has a new competitor in YouView
Google launched the additional functionality to its US customers via Google TV last month and now customers in the UK, France and Germany will be available from November 13th 2012.
As part of the expansion, it has also been revealed that Google will also make music available through its Google TV service as well as movies.
The new features were revealed on Google social networking site Google+, and said that it would be making movies and music available to customers via their Google TV set top boxes which are available from a number of different manufacturers including Sony and Logitech.
At this stage Google has not revealed what additional movies and music content will be available to users of the Google TV service in Europe and whether they intend to make this the selection the same as the American version of the service.
Google TV arrived in the UK in June, and has so far received very limited coverage, the first manufacturer to make a Google TV set top box is Sony, with its NSZ-GS7 Internet Media Player which uses software powered by Google in the same way that the range of Android based smartphones work.
The Google TV set top box connects to a standard television, and comes equipped with full web browsing through Google Chrome and also gives the user access to around 150 Android apps which are all optimised for use on Digital TV.
In the UK it is thought that the Google TV service will be a direct competitor to the brand new YouView service which has also recently launched. Since the launch of YouView, there has been a number of collaborations with the new digital TV service including a roll out onto the BT Vision platform and availability through internet service provider TalkTalk.
