The free to air digital television organisation Freeview has revealed that it has sold 1.3million integrated TV’s and set top boxes that are capable of receiving the Freeview HDservice in Q4 of 2011.
Freeview also revealed that there are 2m active Freeview HD users following its launch in March 2010. It is thought that the build up to the Olympics and Euro 2012 is helping sales of Freeview HD equipment following a lukewarm initial response which saw the new service gradually hit just over 1m sales in just under 12 months.
However the last quarter of 2011 has seen the high definition service from Freeview register 1.3m additional sales making the total number of units sold 4.4m after December. In addition to this, Freeview+ which allows users to pause, rewind and record TV now accounts for 30% of all Freeview sales.
Freeview currently offers four high definition channels with BBC One HD, ITV 1 HD, Channel 4 HD, and BBC HD which is due to become BBC 2 HD, a fifth channel is due to launch in April 2012, but will not be Channel 5 HD as originally thought.
The number of active users is taken from BARB data and has found that 2 million people are using the Freeview HD service and said that Freeview has built up its high definition customer base in “half the time it took Sky to reach a comparable user base.”
Managing director of Freeview Ilse Howling said that 2012 was a huge year for the free to air service with digital switchover due to complete, and the platform reaching its tenth anniversary.
“2012 is set to be a landmark year for the television industry and we have entered it with a bang as a result of fantastic Freeview HD sales figures,”
“Television remains an incredibly important part of people’s lives and Freeview has continued to provide the most-loved programmes in the format people want without the need to pay for a subscription.”
“Our focus now is to ensure we continue to evolve the service and give viewers what they want over the next ten years.”
