Hi TZS

It does sound like you could be in an area of poor reception. You can check your digital tv coverage here http://www.freeview.co.uk/availability/ to see how good coverage is supposed to be. If coverage is listed as good then you may need an aerial upgrade to receive Freeview. Some old TV aerials aren't good enough to get good Freeview reception.

Other options:
Freesat will cost you a Freesat box, satellite receiver and the installation which will cost at least £100 for the equipment and possibly as much again for the installation - you'll need to get a quote from a local aerial installation specialist.

Sky is more expensive in the long run but by the time it is costing you more you'll be able to cancel your contract and then buy a Freesat box if you want. Don't forget that you will get free broadband and a phone home phone package in the price.

If you're in a Virgin Media cable TV area this option will be cheaper than Sky if you really just want basic TV. Their TV M package is currently £12.50 if you don't take their phone line.
Check it out here

My advice would be to consider moving your broadband and home phone to Sky, get the basic package then see if you want to stick with it after the minimum contract.

Hi, my inlaws live in an area that does not get good reception. We bought them a new TV with built in Freeview but they cannot even get channel 5! Its the same for the neighbours so we think probably a reception problem. I have been looking into freesat but cannot seem to figure out the most cost effective way to proceed. To get SKY would mean cheaper satellite dish installation but wouls also mean going from paying only the TV license to paying an extra £17.00+ per month. Any advice?

Hi Ian

I've checked out the postcode you provided and your local TV transmitter has just switched off it's analogue TV signal.

http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/transmitternetwork/transmitter_groups/durris

If the TV there is a few years old you'll need a Freeview box which should only cost £25 or so. Worst case you may need to reposition or upgrade the TV aerial.

I hope that helps a little. Let me know if you manage to sort things out.

Anyone who thinks the Digital TV football picture has improved on ITV since switchover in areas where we used to get good analogue reception must be BLIND AS A BAT WITH ITS EYES PECKED OUT !!

The BBC's is also slightly worse despite a much greater bit rate allocation per channel than ITV1.

Can we have analogue & CEEFAX back please, Logo free of course !!

Hi Sarah

That's a tricky one to answer without popping round to have a look in person. How old is the box? Have you tried updating the tuning or even the software on your Freeview Recorder? There will be a menu called tuning or configuration and you should probably run the whole set-up again. I think this should do it.

Let me know if that helps.

Do you have a Freeview receiver built in to the TV and/or a separate Freeview box? Only a few areas have officialy switched over but there was a Freeview retune update on Wedsnesday that requires everyone across the country to retune the TV using the auto install or auto tune feature on your TV.

If you only have an analogue TV you'll need to buy a Freeview digital TV set top box if your area has switched off.
