Sky TV was one of the first digital TV companies to offer high definition or HD TV to customers.  They currently have the largest amount of HD channels available to viewers out of all of the digital TV service providers and the largest amount of high definition content available from all of the service providers.

What channels do you get?

With Sky you pay a monthly subscription to subscribe to the HD pack which then catergorises the HD channels that are available in each of the entertainment packs that you get with Sky.  With the HD pack, depending on what channels you subscribe to in your basic Sky TV pack, so for example if you subscribe to the kids pack on Sky, you will also get Nickelodeon and Disney XD in high definition.

The Sky+ HD Box

All subscribers to the HD pack will get the following channels Sky Atlantic HD, Sky News HD, ITV 2 HD, ITV 3 HD, ITV 4 HD, and E4 HD.  It is also worth noting that all Sky subscribers regardless of whether or not they have the HD pack from Sky will also get the following high definition channels: BBC HD, BBC 1 HD, ITV1 HD, Luxe TV HD, Channel 4 HD, and FIVE HD.

What equipment do you get?

With Sky, all subscribers get the iconic Sky+ HD box as standard with any digital TV viewing package from Sky.  It it’s up to you whether or not you choose to purchase the HD pack from Sky.  All subscribers regardless of HD pack subscription will get at least six HD channels from the likes of BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

The Sky+ HD box is also a PVR (or personal video recorder) with a twin tuner meaning that you can watch one program whilst watching another simultaneously, and pause and rewind live TV meaning that you can nip off to the loo, or make a quick cup of tea without worrying about missing your favourite programs.  The basic Sky+ HD box is capable of storing 185 hours of standard definition programs, or 60 hours of high definition programs and can normally be purchased for free due to the special offers Sky usually have.  For real technophiles there is a 1TB (terabyte) Sky+ HD box which is capable of storing up to 240 hours of high definition content, this also comes at a one off equipment charge of £249.

What does it cost?

For Sky HD you need a HD subscription and a Sky HD box.  Depending on special offers the HD box is normally free and a standard installation costs around £30, the box remains yours to keep.  The HD pack from Sky is currently £10.25 per month on top of your basic digital TV subscription, and this entitles you to get the same range of HD channels that have in your base entertainment pack.  If you don’t want the HD pack from Sky, you can also get the six free-to-air HD channels as standard to all Sky customers that have a Sky+ HD box.
