High Definition or HD has been around for quite some time now on digital TV, and despite the newer technology which is coming out such as 3D TV and TV on demand, high definition remains one of the biggest considerations consumers make when they look to buy and compare digital TV services from the likes of Sky, Virgin Media, Freesat, Freeview and BT.
Most of the newer TV’s that are made from television manufacturers such as Sony, Panasonic, LG and Samsung have HD or high definition built in as standard but you also need a service that is capable of returning HD quality pictures to your TV so you can enjoy high definition content.
Let’s take a step back though….
What is high definition or HD?
At the most basic level high definition or HD TV gives us the ability to view pictures, programs and images at a higher resolution than a normal standard definition picture. That means that when you are watching a TV program in high definition, you will see detail that you never would have seen on a standard definition picture, for example, whilst watching a football match you could literally see each blade of grass on the pitch when the camera focuses on the players close up, and you would also see the pictures in extremely vibrant colour. It’s almost like you are sitting in the stadium itself!
What do you need to get High Definition?
In order to watch high definition or HD TV you will need to get the following:
- A high definition TV, these are available at most good high street retailers such as John Lewis, and Dixons from a range of manufacturers including Sony, LG, Samsung and Panasonic.
- A high definition TV service, these are services which are capable of broadcasting in high definition. So at the moment digital TV providers such as Sky, Virgin Media, BT Vision, Freesat and Freeview can all provide high definition content.
- Depending on which service you take, you will also need a high definition source, some newer models of TV have Freeview HD built in as standard, but if you buy a service from Sky, or Virgin Media, you will need to get a high definition or HD compatible set top box such as Virgin Media’s V+ Box or Sky’s Sky+ HD box. You can also buy a blu-ray DVD player which is also capable of playing back HD quality content via DVD’s.
What services are available?
Services that are available will depend on what you are looking for from your high definition service. Some providers offer many channels, others offer a large amount of high definition TV on demand content, and some just offer the basic channels, which is all that people want.
